How Would You Use The iPad?

How Would You Use The iPad?

With all the buzz around Apple's iPad (yeah I'm not sold on the name either, enough with the feminine protection jokes already) we've been giving some serious thought as to how we'd use the iPad in our daily creative process.

I'd love to hear from you and how you would use the iPad in your personal or professional life. For example: I can really see us using the iPad to show clients creative concepts for their projects. There's a certain sexiness and intimate factor of being able to sit down on a nice comfy sofa next to a client and let them flick through their design concepts.

I'm very interested in looking at an iPad for it's affect on the publishing industry (books, magazines, publications, etc.) and how a company like ours can leverage our experience in book design and marry it with our interactive skills as well. Is there a market there? I believe there will be.

We have a bunch of other ideas as to how we'd use it but I really want to get your thoughts on this. I'll be the first to admit I was a bit underwhelmed by the iPad presentation in some ways but the same was said of the iPod and iPhone and look at those babies now.

Is this a revolution? I'm thinking it's going to change user experience in a big way. Maybe not tomorrow or even this year but it's heading in the right direction. Like Apple or not you have to respect them for doing things different and leading the way.

What do you think?

My wife and I own a photography business and think the Ipad will make a great addition to the current computer equipment we use. We will use it to fill out contracts, display our work and creating slideshows for weddings. Anyone know if you can connect to a printer?

I was hoping Apple would have at least one hook that would wow me, but they didn't. I can't help but wonder if the iPod Touch was a pilot project for the iPad. Myself, the iPad will replace my iPod Touch: a casual e-mail, web browsing, task scheduling device. Something that lets me watch movies with the kids, check out recipes, and quickly see the calendar so keep on top freelance work--a companion to allow me some freedom to get away from the desk. I'm hoping the next iteration of the iPad will have a stylus input (a real one, not the rubber-tipped crayon that) with pressure sensitivity so I can do sketches while catching up on my must-see TV. I can see an iPad being a lethal weapon for businesses--imagine using it as a personal presentation device that allows your client to interact with concepts. I'm sure companies are wringing their hands with anticipation to release accessories to display your iPad in interesting ways around the home and office. Perhaps it'll be a revolution of a different sort--casual computing. I won't be getting one this time around, though--I've long learned that with Apple… it's usually best to wait for the 2nd generation.

Wonder if there would be someway to tether that to your camera? Probably not since you would need to run Aperture or Lightroom. Still would be very cool to show client images after they've been shot and their sifting through the finals. Good question on the printer. I think there are some printer apps for the iPhone so you'd think the iPad would have those capabilities as well. Cheers! Bill

I also wonder if I can tether it to my Iphone to have 3G on the road if I choose to buy the wifi model? So many questions. What is it now? About 50 more days till release? LOL Not that I'm counting or anything. LOL

Good points Manny. I've read some of the same comments about the iPad not being a true tablet but more like a really big iPod touch. There's definitely some truth in that. Interesting too how different users with different needs see how they'd use it. You probably do a lot of illustrating so it would have been perfect to have a stylus. I'm leaning on your thoughts about presentation purposes too. It just doesn't seem like it has the application to be a fully fledged real working product for daily design but to do the less heavy lifting like managing and communicating could be loads of fun. A few days with one will tell us loads I'm sure.

You know Steve. I thought the same thing about the tethering as well. Of course this might be a perfect opportunity to spawn a whole list of new external devices for Apple or their vendors. We'll most likely get one. If it fill some needs we have then possibly two. Have to say I'm super curious to see how the book store works and how that will play out. The publishing industry is showing a lot of interest. Cheers!

The iPad would be a great tool for going over concepts with a client during a meeting, however it would be very limited as to what you could actually display with it. I was very disappointed when I realized that (surprise surprise) it didn't support Flash. It is far too soon to render Flash obsolete on the internet, therefor any device that browses the web should support it by default. iPhones, iPods, and the iPad included. I do realize that HTML5 is being pushed by the Apple gurus, and that's all fine and dandy. It's a very lightweight and functional replacement for Flash and I'm all for using it more. But seriously, don't forget about the standard that started interactive web surfing! That being said, the iPad certainly beats huddling over a laptop to view concepts!

I imagine that I would use the iPad for road trips (in car/train surfing, book reading, music, movies) where you want a larger screen than your BlackBerry or iPod, but not the size/weight of your laptop, assuming the battery life is sufficient. I might use it as a second device around the home for the same uses, but would want some kind of stand/holder if I'm using it for kitchen recipes, in lap surfing, etc. Total personal uses right now, from a work perspective, without the USB ports it couldn't replace my laptop. Thanks for the thread Bill!

I feel that Apple doesn't innovate so much as take other people's ideas and give them a dose of sexy, and a good dose of usability. I think that for FULLY functional tablet use, the upcoming Android tablets will be superior. If they'd pulled a bit closer to OSX then iPhone OS, then I think it would have been a much stronger product.

I was counting down the days for the iPad announcement day. I too was a little underwhelmed with the presentation. I guess I had just envision it, and it turned out to be exactly what I had thought. A Big iPhone. BUT I LOVE IT I'm so pumped to get one. I'll wait for the 2nd Generation to have a front facing camera, so skyping on my 3G will be possible. How am I going to use it in my iLife?? Well as a sales agent, I'm constantly getting people to sign documents and email/fax them off to others to do the same. Now/Soon, I'll be able to get the signature on my iPad and it automatically email out to other agents/lawyers/clients that need it. Thus making my job paperless. Something I've long wished for. Reading my different news sites, and rss feeds will be a dream. retweeting/twitter/facebook interaction will be seemless and a breeze. As an individual who is just starting to take his business online, using social media and video, I'm absolutely stoked on what the iPad can bring to the equation.

Great insight Ben. As more than a presentation tool for client drafts and to show off sexy mockups etc I think it's going to be great. What really has me excited is how this may truly be the beginning of a revolution for the publication industry. This could seriously change things for them and revive a dying industry overnight. I'm not sure I'll have the fortitude to hold off the 2nd generation like you but you're probably right it makes the most sense to let them work the kinks out of it first. I've heard lots of people chat about the front facing camera and ability to Skype from it as well. Will be interesting to see how Apple responds. All the best! Bill
